SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Overall goal
The project aims to improve the status of threatened biodiversity in the Western Balkans through enhanced planning, financing, implementation, and monitoring of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans biodiversity pillar.
Expected results
1: Effective implementation and monitoring of the Nature and Biodiversity Pillar of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB)
2: Consolidated regional cooperation and environmental governance on biodiversity conservation in the Western Balkans (WB)
3: Enhanced implementation of conservation measures through improved financing and action on the ground
Target group / Beneficiaries
The main target groups include 150 employees of the ministries in charge of environment in the Western Balkans, public institutions for nature protection, 250 regional experts in nature protection, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) employees (=BioNET members), local CSOs, 30 local and international experts engaged in capacity building and 600 representatives of other sectors (e.g. media, business). The main partner for implementation is the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) with the Regional Working group on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (RWG GAWB). Overall coordination of the GAWB processes at the regional level is the responsibility of the RCC, while each pillar has its designated coordinating organisation, IUCN being designated for the nature and biodiversity pillar. The project area is comprised of six Western Balkans (WB) economies – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Context
In the Western Balkans, the GAWB, which seeks to align the region with the EU’s ambition to become climate-neutral by 2050 and key elements of the European Green Deal, is the primary policy framework for regional and economic action and coordination on biodiversity conservation and restoration. The Sofia Declaration on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, endorsed in November 2020, conveyed the clear commitment of the WB economies to strengthen regional cooperation and strategic planning on biodiversit
