PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation
Georgia is faced with ongoing degradation of its forests. This means that their biological diversity is declining, which means that they can store less and less CO2. The main reasons for this are the rural population's high demand for firewood, environmentally harmful forest management, illegal logging and the noticeable effects of climate change. At all levels, there is a lack of data, regulations, practices and competencies for long-term and biodiversity-friendly forest management in Georgia.
In 2013, the Georgian government therefore initiated a comprehensive forestry reform. A particular challenge is to cushion possible negative side effects for the rural population.
target
The Georgian government is implementing the forestry reform, thereby reducing forest degradation.
Approach
The project disseminates resource-saving forest management methods and energy efficiency measures. It also works to improve the living conditions of rural households. To this end, it promotes the development of skills and cooperation in the state, business and the population.
Employees of the partner organizations receive training on how to implement the new forest legislation. Partners include the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MoEPA) and its sub-agencies, as well as regional and district technical agencies. In order to be able to implement the planned forestry reform in the long term, the project supports the organizations in introducing n
