PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Litter in the oceans has reached dramatic proportions, threatening marine animals, marine habitats, and human health.
Most of the litter enters the oceans via rivers. This is due to inadequate waste management in many developing and emerging countries, but also due to the increasing export of plastic waste from industrialized nations to these countries.
Germany, under the leadership of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection, is committed to combating marine litter – including through the "Marine Debris Framework – Regional Hubs Around the Globe" (Marine:DeFRAG) program.
Partner organizations in developing and emerging countries are implementing effective concepts to manage plastic and prevent marine litter. This positions them in international processes.
The project advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection and provides expert knowledge on the negotiations for a global plastics agreement, as well as current country-specific information. Based on this, it develops concepts for waste management – i.e., how to avoid, reuse, recycle, and dispose of waste, as well as combat marine litter.
At the same time, the project supports partner organizations in relevant regions in developing such concepts and positioning them in international
