π Tender Overview
Status: in planning
The railway junction in Frankfurt (Main) is one of the busiest traffic junctions in the Deutsche Bahn rail network. However, it is already reaching its capacity limits. As a result, trains sometimes have to wait before entering Frankfurt Central Station until another train has cleared the track. This causes delays.
It is therefore planned to build a new long-distance train tunnel at Frankfurt Central Station, including an underground station with four platform edges. This will increase the capacities in the Frankfurt hub for long-distance and local traffic by around 20 percent. In this way, a crucial bottleneck in the German rail network can be resolved.
The construction of the long-distance railway tunnel will help ensure that traffic flows more smoothly in the future. In addition, shorter travel times are possible and delays are reduced. In the future, long-distance trains will be able to travel through the Frankfurt hub up to eight minutes faster. Local transport will benefit from the free platforms and track capacities in the above-ground station.
A preliminary investigation area was defined for the new long-distance railway tunnel. This runs from the NiederrΓ€der bridge over Frankfurt's main train station in an easterly direction to Oberrad and Fechenheim.
The project is being implemented on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and is part of the "Frankfurt RheinMain plus" program.
