SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Overall goal
The long-term impact of the project is that the level of cooperation and collaborative efforts of rural development actors in municipalities/districts of Georgia proper and Abkhazia is increased and that consequently the lives and well-being of the rural communities that they serve will be improved. This will be achieved by supporting Local Action Groups (LAG) to become recognized and reputable partners within the rural development ecosystem which is the intended outcome of the project.
Expected results
1: Cooperation with rural development partners strengthened and joint projects financed & implemented.
2: Networking of LAGs improved and reputation as development partners increased.
3: Sustainability of LAGs enhanced through tailored capacity development measures.
Target group / Beneficiaries
The target groups are rural development actors including municipalities and district authorities, state agencies, NGOs, UN agencies and the private sector in Georgia proper and Abkhazia. Key among these are Local Action Groups in Georgia proper and Abkhazia. While the project will place a particular focus on supporting the LAGs in Zugdidi and Akhmeta municipalities, it will also work with LAGs in 12 other municipalities, primarily through interaction and support to the Georgian Association of LAGs (GALAG) that unites these LAGs. In Abkhazia the project will focus on two LAGs – Gali and Tkvarcheli – but will also work with the three other LAGs in the territory. In total, c. 2,400 people will directly benefit from the project. The LAGs and other rural development actors will support the lives and well-being of approx. 620,000 people in their respective rural communities.
Activities
- Promote engagement and dialogue between LAGs and local development actors (state, civil society & private sector) – through a combination of bilateral meetings, workshops and events – to co-finance and realize a minimum of 20 local development initiatives. These co-financed initiatives will be in line with strategic plans and should prioritize the social and economic inclusion of women, youth and vulnerable groups.
- Inter-LAG collaboration, through GALAG with its interactions with members, key stakeholders – including the state Rural Development Agency – and international counterparts.
- Finance a minimum of six inter-LAG projects in both Georgia proper and Abkhazia to facilitate cross-municipal/district cooperation and confidence building between different ethnic communities.
- Technical support and capacity development for the four target LAGs to build their communication, operational and fundraising capabilities to increase their long-term sustainability.
