π Tender Overview
The SUN2HY strategic joint initiative promoted by REPSOL and ENAGAS as Associated Partners and led by SUN2HY company framed in this call, is part of an exhaustive roadmap born to give response to the hydrogen demand of the next decades, focused on demonstrating the cost-effectiveness and robustness of a ground-breaking concept: Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC). The novelty behind the PEC lies in the capacity to directly convert solar energy to chemical energy, by splitting water in hydrogen and oxygen, thanks to the use of solar energy without external energy input, providing a sustainable alternative route for renewable hydrogen. The strong investments dedicated by both companies until now have allowed generating highly promising results of the industrialisation of the technology: the existing prototypes have been built with affordable materials that were optimised in an integrated system based on a modular design. They have been exhaustively tested in a pilot plant reaching a TRL 6 before the development of this project. The commitment of REPSOL and ENAGAS has resulted in the constitution of a new company, SUN2HY, in charge of implementing the initiative and commercialising this technology in the future. SUN2HY is leading the consortium to orient the results reached in this project towards the needs of potential buyers and investors. The identified business opportunity of the co-developed innovative technology lies in a combination of efficiency, stability and cost, allowing its competitive industrial commercialisation. The aim of the present project is to demonstrate the first PEC pre-commercial plant in the world with a production capacity of 201 tH2/year, ensuring supply of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in the surroundings of Puertollano Industrial Complex (Spain) for the mobility sector (freight buses, trucks and light vehicles). During 10 years of operation, a total amount of 23,209.10 tonCO2eq. will be avoided.
