Summary
This project will support Uganda’s National Council for Science and Technology to strengthen the country’s research and innovation systems. The project aims to enhance the Council’s capacity to fund and manage research and innovation projects aligned with national priorities outlined in Uganda’s Vision 2040, the Fourth National Development Plan and its growth strategy. These research and innovation projects will also help generate evidence and build the systems needed to deliver on the Council’s four statutory functions: regulating all aspects of science, technology and innovation; translating policy into regulations and standards; monitoring and evaluating performance; and improving scientists’ capacity. The project is expected to lead to stronger research funding systems, improved collaboration among academia, industry and policy actors and enhancing inclusion. The Council expects production to increase and use more innovations, policy tools and standards to contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
This project is part of the third phase of the Science Granting Councils Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI-3), an initiative funded by IDRC, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), and the Wellcome Trust. Since it began in March 2015, the initiative has grown the capacity of Africa’s Science Granting Councils to support research and evidence-based policymaking, feeding into economic and social development.
