π Tender Overview
Development Objective
To extend and strengthen the electricity grid network and enable private sector participation in renewable energy generation.
The regional states involved include Amhara, Oromia, Benshangul Gumz, Gambela, Tigray, Afar, Somali, Sidama, South West Ethiopia and SNNP.
Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) is the implementing agency for the first component, which has an estimated cost of US$225.7 million, of which the World Bank will provide US$184 million while US$41.7 million will come from counterpart funding. EEU is the state-owned entity responsible for power distribution, sales and customer services.
The second component of PRIME-1 will see the construction of 10 substations and related transmission lines to ensure adequate transmission capacity for the above towns and surrounding areas as well as four additional lines with substations to improve the overall grid reliability and carrying capacity. These include the Bure-Injibara, Haramaya-Chelenko, Hawassa-Shashemene, Arsi Robe-Assela, and Woliso and Durame transmission lines and substations.
The second component will also support the modernisation of the transmission grid. The total cost of the component is estimated at US$311 million, of which US$281 million will come from the World Bank and US$30 million from counterpart funding.
The third component will finance drilling for geothermal resources at locations beyond the Aluto Langagno area in preparation for private sector-led development of more than 100MW of geothermal power. The project has identified two proposed sites for development, Tendaho-Alalobad and Aluto-Adonshe, as well as two additional wells in Aluto-Bobessa, subject to the success of ongoing drilling activities.
