In Central and West Africa, initiatives are underway to establish close collaboration between academics and non-academics in production, promotion and dissemination of βtraditionalβ knowledge (non-academic) in the fields of health, agriculture, governance and education. However, some sectors seem to be better integrated than others, although there is a lack of literature about the causes.
This project aims to fill this gap by studying the foundations of collaboration between the two spheres of knowledge production, as well as their scope and limitations.
The project will provide evidence on the issues and challenges in the use of indigenous knowledge in African mainstream knowledge systems. Findings will be disseminated widely with relevant stakeholders in the two countries, and national/international platforms and peer-reviewed African education journals. This study is an opportunity for IDRC to position itself as a leader on this issue, and with a knowledge sharing strategy, the results can contribute to many countries traditional knowledge promotion efforts.
