Durban Port Expansion Tender

Scope Ministry of Transport announced plans to unveil Durban Port expansion investment. According to the minister of transportations office the planned investments will likely contribute significantly to the expansion of the oceans economy and the execution of the marine transport strategy. Liquid bulk operating licenses access rights for the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme RMIPPPP and the construction of an onshore liquefied natural gas LNG regasification facility are just a few of the investments that Mbalula has approved so far. Work would include the deepening of the Maydon Wharf channel to allow larger modern vessels to enter the port the infill of Pier 1 and Pier 2 to create additional capacity for containers and the development of a new container terminal in the Point Precinct. The expansion of the Port of Durban precinct would require R100 billion in new investment over the next decade. The upgrade is expected to expand capacity for container handling from 2.9 million units to more than 11 million units. Some challenges like slow turnaround times truck congestion ship berthing delays and anchorage times and poor maintenance of equipment have contributed to low productivity levels at the port. The expansion of the Port of Durban precinct would require R100 billion in new investment over the next decade in a project that aimed at improving efficiency at one of the countrys key drivers of economic growth.The ministers initiatives will serve as a catalyst for attracting investments in the creation of new world-class infrastructure and enhancing the ports competitiveness as vital drivers of economic growth. After launching Request for Information RFI solicitations for possible private sector investment partners in August of last year Transnet proceeded along with its R100 billion development plans for the Port of Durban.
