PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation
The number of air conditioning systems in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will more than triple from around 5.4 million by 2030. It is therefore important to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make cooling technologies more energy efficient. This is made more difficult by the high costs and limited availability of air conditioning systems with natural refrigerants. The project therefore plans to develop a funding program for green air conditioning systems in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Objective
The cooperating countries are implementing national funding programs for green air conditioning systems with heat pump functions within their national Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome (ITMO) framework.
Approach
It is also implementing an exemplary carbon financing instrument that takes carbon financing into account in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The cooperating countries are being supported in this by developing a refrigeration sector-related ITMO project. The project also supports some of the countries on a selective basis with regard to their ITMO frameworks. It is also developing financing mechanisms to maintain financing for green air conditioning systems beyond the end of the project.
