Objective
The convergence process to a Social Market Economy is a decisive aspect of the emergence of a common identity among Europeans. Yet this model is often ignored or misunderstood by most EU-citizens or even decision makers.
The EU-CONV Jean Monnet Chair will infuse dynamism into teaching, learning, and research on European convergence towards the common economic and social model in the EU. The development and spread of the European Social Market Economy will be examined from a new transnational and comparative perspective based on a historical approach. At the Institut dβΓtudes Politiques of Rennes (IEP), this initiative will encompass activities integrated into bachelor's and master's programmes, international exchanges, and initiatives tailored for a non-academic audience.
The project will provide new courses on the history of European convergence (bachelor) and on the Social Market Economy (master). It will also elevate existing European studies courses for French, European, and non-European students, refocusing on the European convergence process and Europeanisation of the diverse societies of the continent. These courses will enrich specialised training and promote the inclusion of European history courses for all students.
EU-CONV will organise events to disseminate European studies locally and regionally, reaching broader audiences like pupils, companies, trade unions, and civil servants. Dedicated digital tools (video clips) will amplify knowledge about the European model and EU convergence policies, ensuring widespread access.
The project will advance research and debate by hosting an international colloquium during its second year and producing print and online publications, starting with a monograph based on primary sources. Critical to the project will be the creation of a network of academics and practitioners on EU convergence issues.
In essence, the EU-CONV project will promote a dynamic, integrated et innovative approach to European studies.
