The Togo Corridor, which reaches from the north to the south of Togo, connects the port city of Lomé, the capital of the country, to Ouagadougou, the capital of the landlocked Burkina Faso, and is a logistical lifeline not only for Burkina Faso but also for neighboring countries such as the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger. The corridor consists mainly of National Route 1, which runs through the country, and National Route 17, which branches off to the west from Sokodé, a city in the central part of the country located on National Route 1.
Signing ceremony
In recent years, due to the development of the Togo Corridor, Sokodé has been experiencing increased traffic volume, which in turn has led to a disruption in the distribution of goods (as a result of congestion) as well as to an increase in the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians and motorcyclists.
To address these issues, a bypass will be constructed as a detour around Sokodé to redirect traffic passing through the city, thereby alleviating congestion and ensuring traffic safety, while at the same time facilitating the distribution of goods via National Route 1 and National Route 17.
This project will contribute to the revitalization of economic activity in Togo and surrounding landlocked countries by improving the efficiency of the Togo Corridor as a whole. It will therefore also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 3 (Good health and well-being), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), and 13 (Climate action).
