PROJECT DESCRIPTION (EN)
Context
The ecosystem of the Benguela Current is one of the most productive and biologically diverse marine areas in the world. South Africa, Namibia and Angola depend on its natural resources. The most important economic sectors include aquaculture, maritime shipping and the extraction of oil, gas, diamonds and other minerals. The protection of biodiversity and environmentally friendly management must be more firmly anchored in regional and national policies and the actions based on them.
Objective
Marine Spatial Planning (MRP) organizes the management of the Benguela Current in an environmentally friendly manner and contributes to marine protection.
method
MRP is a decision-making process that controls when and where human activity occurs in the Benguela Current. Protection goals that affect biodiversity are integrated into the planning. MRP thus contributes to maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
To this end, the project supports measures that are implemented nationally by the governments of the three countries and regionally within the framework of the Benguela Current Convention in order to build up competencies. The aim is to create learning opportunities and gain practical experience in MRP and the description of "ecologically or biologically significant marine areas" (EBSAs).
The project has prepared sea space plans for each country base
