π Tender Overview
Objectives
Despite the fact that computational thinking and programming are seen as more important than ever in European schools and universities, the level of implementation is uneven and is lagging behind on the tertiary level. The objective of this project is to provide a pragmatic toolbox for the development of computational thinking and programming skills in a mathematical context at the tertiary level, in particular to support mobility of students and academics across Europe.
Activities
We conduct surveys and interview students and faculty to identify best practices, obstacles and needs for integrating programming in undergraduate mathematics education. Using this information, we bring together universities that are on the cutting edge with universities new to programming in mathematics education and create a broad range of educational material targeting computational thinking in a mathematical context. Several conferences are planned to disseminate the findings.
Impact
The project will result in an inventory of best practices, and a range of tutorials, in-class material and student projects that take current obstacles and needs of students and faculty into account with respect to the integration of programming and computational thinking into tertiary mathematics education. These materials will make it easier for students, faculty and universities across Europe to integrate computational thinking and programming into mathematical contexts.
