π Tender Overview
Break-Through Rocks
A Closer Look At Rock Fractures Before And During Quakesthe Ability To Accurately Predict The Time, Location And Magnitude Of Future Earthquakes Remains Limited. Now, The Erc-Funded Break Project Is Shaking Up The World Of Earthquake Mechanics. It Will Investigate Whether The Deformation In EarthβS Crust Localises Onto Faults That May, Either Rupture Rapidly Producing Earthquakes, Or Undergo Slow Aseismic Slip. Specifically, It Will Provide The First Quantitative Laboratory Observations Of The Full Displacement Field In Rocks Before And During Fault Slip And Separate The Aseismic And Seismic Components Of It. The Project Will Develop Novel Experimental Techniques Based Primarily On Simultaneous Dynamic Synchrotron X-Ray Microtomography Imaging And Acoustic Emission Data Acquisition And Analysis.
