PROJECT DESCRIPTION (EN)
Initial situation
South Africa is one of the world's 20 largest emitters of greenhouse gases. The coal-heavy power supply and industry are particularly responsible for this.

At the same time, the country is particularly hard hit by the consequences of climate change. Extreme weather events, such as the severe drought in the Cape Town region of 2016-2018, are becoming more frequent. The temperature in South Africa is also expected to rise comparatively sharply. The challenge is to translate South Africa's ambitious mitigation contributions into national climate action to mitigate emissions and adapt to climate change.

At the same time, the country – with its three global biodiversity hotspots – is crucial to conserving global biological diversity (Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework). In order to counter the threat to biodiversity, it is essential to take sufficient account of biodiversity and ecosystems in politics and planning.

Objective
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) develops and implements knowledge-based and effective climate and biodiversity measures that implement and increase South Africa's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

method
The project supports the DFFE in implementing the national climate goals in the areas of climate protection, adaptation to climate change and transparency.
