PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Initial situation:
The negative impacts of climate change and population growth are threatening the livelihoods of the population in the Ethiopian highlands. Almost 50 percent of agricultural land is eroding due to intensive farming, wind, and water. This results in the loss of at least 30,000 hectares of fertile land each year, which provides a livelihood for more than 150,000 people. The watersheds of Lake Chamo, for example, are affected.
The strategies and measures for environmentally friendly landscape management developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and its partners often cannot be implemented due to a lack of the necessary local skills. Furthermore, public sector employees are not yet familiar with the application of integrated landscape management, which should address the needs of all population groups.
Objective:
Ethiopia is introducing the concept of integrated landscape management to improve living conditions nationally, regionally, and locally.
Approach:
The project operates as follows:
- It supports policymakers by developing strategies for key challenges, such as livestock farming. The project also contributes to aligning policy toward community-led approaches by developing integrated landscape management.
It contributes to the introduction of community-oriented land management in selected landscapes in Central Ethiopia and Sidamo.
It supports the expansion of locally successful models
