Summary
The objective of this project is to address a critical knowledge gap at the intersection of climate change and care by examining internal migrations and the reconfiguration of unpaid and underpaid care work in Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Egypt. It will produce empirical data on the distribution of care responsibilities and the impact of climate stress on them, map both formal and informal community-level responses to them, and develop targeted recommendations that will feed into social protection reforms and other government policies and initiatives. It will also mobilize research teams and engage with policymakers and influencers through training and workshop programs.
The project is expected to generate empirical evidence and policy-relevant insights that reposition care systems β both formal and informal β as essential social infrastructure for resilience and inclusion. Specifically, the project will produce four country-specific policy reports, a comparative best policy practices report and five research papers to inform public policy and social-protection reform.
This project is one of five regional initiatives supported by IDRC to advance locally grounded research addressing the intersection of care and climate change, with the aim of informing scalable, gender-transformative solutions in low- and middle-income countries.
