PROJECT DESCRIPTION (DE)
Context:
Following the ceasefire with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in 2022, the Ethiopian government aims to implement nationwide transitional justice. It aims to initiate truth-telling, social cohesion, institutional reforms to ensure non-repetition, and accountability. To this end, it intends to create new state institutions and elements within the justice system. At the same time, the government intends to involve civil society organizations, victims, survivors' associations, and regional government representatives in the process.
Objective:
To improve the conditions for state and civil society actors at the national, regional, and local levels to implement restorative transitional justice and gender justice in Ethiopia.
Approach:
The project strengthens the capacity of national leaders to implement gender-equitable and victim-centered transitional justice. This includes advising and supporting the Ministry of Justice and, in particular, institutions newly established by the government, such as the Truth and Social Cohesion Commission.
The project promotes the participation of civil society organizations. It expands their capacities to shape transitional justice through training, networking, and consulting.
Furthermore, the project trains regional government representatives in selected regions on gender equality and transitional justice.
Locally, the project improves the conditions for civil society and government actors to expand gender-equitable services, psychosocial support, and addressing the past.
