π Tender Overview
Scope :
Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is planning a pilot installation of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity to hold surplus geothermal energy and facilitate the integration of solar and wind projects into the national grid.
The pilot BESS installation is being considered for several regions including the Central Rift, the Coastal Region, Mount Kenya, Nairobi, the North Rift and Western Kenya.
The specific project site selection will depend on the outcome of a feasibility study being conducted with World Bank support.
Kenyaβs 20-year Least Cost Power Development Plan, which is updated every two years, envisages 400MW of BESS capacity being installed by 2030, along with 350MW of solar, 206MW of wind and 400MW of geothermal.
The country is aiming for 100% clean energy production by 2030.
The feasibility study will determine the size, locations and timing of the BESS investments.
