Project Summary
APEC economies face a significant green skills gap, limiting transition toward a climate-resilient and future-ready workforce. More specifically, climate change and automation threaten over 40% of jobs in high-risk sectors, disproportionately impacting women and aging workers. Addressing the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040 on digital innovation and inclusive, sustainable economic growth, this 14-month project will organize a hybrid seminar to examine best practices of integrating AI into green skills training supporting workforce transformation across APEC economies. This seminar will engage APEC key stakeholders, multilateral fora, agencies, education and training institutions, as well as industry leaders to identify effective AI-powered green skills training practices for APEC economies. The seminar will benefit multiple APEC economies by providing a guideline for scaling AI-powered workforce training programs that equip workers with green skills essential for sustainable jobs and climate resilience.
Relevance
Region
The twin forces of AI-driven automation and climate change are reshaping the workforce in APEC economies, creating an urgent need for adaptation. By 2025, AI and automation are expected to displace 85 million jobs while generating 97 million new roles (World Economic Forum [WEF], 2020). Meanwhile, climate change threatens economic stability, with potential GDP losses of up to 18% by 2050 in the Asia-Pacific. Climate-related disasters have already forced over 40 million people to migrate internally, disrupting employment and livelihoods (As
