The projectβs operation is part of the effort of the GoA to improve the water and sanitation service delivery in the country as enunciated in the NDP and Sector Investment Plan. It is expected to contribute to the betterment of the health and socioeconomic situation of the beneficiary townsβ populations. The project will consist of the following three components: (i) Development of Sanitation Infrastructure; (ii) Capacity building and institutional strengthening; and (iii) Project Management.
Project Objectives
The development objective of the project is to improve access to climate-resilient and sustainable sanitation services in the Coastal Towns of Benguela, BaΓa Farta, Catumbela and Lobito. The achievement of the project development objective will require strengthening of the capacity of communities and the public and private service providers. It will provide the necessary sanitation infrastructure for ensuring effective treatment of wastewater and faecal sludge, collection and transportation, and improvement at household level. Schools and health facilities in the project area will receive assistance to acquire improved sanitation facilities.
Beneficiaries
The project area is located within the Benguela province of Angola and covers the coastal towns of Benguela [769,492], BaΓa Farta [71,122], Catumbela [126,653] and Lobito [476,358] with combined population size of 1.4 million. The proportion of women is estimated at 52.6% and close to 48% of the population is young 0-14 years old. The project interventions will benefit all the residents of the four towns directly and women will be the main beneficiaries due to their role, especially mothers of young children whose productivity is adversely affected when they have to take care of young children who suffer from frequent episodes of diarrhoea as well as the time spent seeking healthcare.
