Summary
Africa loses an estimated two to five percent of its gross domestic product each year due to climate shocks, yet it emits less than four percent of global emissions. While artificial intelligence (AI) could help strengthen climate resilience and support the Sustainable Development Goal on combating climate change and its impacts, its advantages often miss vulnerable populations. In addition, AI's resource demands and data biases may worsen existing inequalities.
This project will support establishment of an AI Climate Innovation Hub, which aims to support the responsible scaling of locally led AI-driven climate solutions by facilitating mentorship, access to relevant data, strategic partnerships and catalytic resources. It will generate interdisciplinary evidence at the intersection of climate science and responsible AI, examining both the environmental trade-offs and the transformative potential of AI to strengthen climate resilience. The hub will seek to drive policy engagement to ensure African perspectives shape the responsible development and deployment of climate AI innovations for equitable and sustainable impact.
This project is a part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development program (AI4D), a five-year partnership between IDRC and the United Kingdomβs Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support policy, innovations and expanded leadership to spur safe and responsible AI development and use in Africa.
