Summary
This project aims to advance solutions that unlock opportunities for women and girls to improve their lives and those of their families, communities and society at large. It will do so by identifying and amplifying solutions to recognize, reduce and redistribute unpaid care work (encompassing child and elder care, care for people living with disabilities and other care work, functions normally filled by women). This will provide a platform for learning and multi-stakeholder dialogue and foster knowledge synthesis, communication and collaboration among African researchers, policymakers, implementation partners, women’s rights organizations and impacted communities. The project will serve as a regional hub advocating for positive change in the lives of marginalized women and girls and promoting solutions to address a significant barrier that impedes them from realizing their full potential.
The project will have three elements: developing a knowledge hub as the primary source for localized knowledge, data and insights on unpaid care issues in Africa to support policy and program implementation; facilitating structured exchanges, dialogues and peer learning to advance solutions for unpaid care work in Africa; and
enhancing the visibility of locally driven care innovations and amplifying African voices in regional and global forums, including hosting the flagship Africa Care Forum in 2026 to showcase effective practices, connect stakeholders and stimulate action.
This project is part of the Scaling Care Innovation in Africa initiative, a five-year partnership between IDRC and Global Affairs Canada aimed at scaling tested and locally grounded policy and program innovations to redress gender inequalities in unpaid care work in sub-Saharan Africa.
