06-25-26 Visit of Sofia Zaharakis to Halki: We support the schools of the islands in practice and invest in equal opportunities for every student
The Minister of Education Religion and Sports Sofia Zaharakis went to Chalkis who had contacts with representatives of the educational community and the Mayor of Chalkis Evangelos Fragakis. At the center of the discussions were the orderly operation of the islands school units the recording of educational and building renovationsas well as the planning of targeted interventions aimed at the continuous upgrading of the educational services provided.
The Minister expressed to the Mayor of Chalkis her interest in meeting the needs of the islands school buildings with an emphasis on maintenance and accessibility interventions as well as the possibilities of further utilizing financial tools to upgrade the building infrastructure. As Sofia Zaharaki clarified We closely monitor the needs of the school unitsof Halki prioritizing issues of building maintenance upgrading networks and improving accessibility for people with disabilities so that the schools of the island fully meet modern educational requirements.
The Minister after thanking the islands teachers for their contribution and dedication to their work which is carried out under particularly demanding conditions underlined that Supporting the schools of the small islands is for us asufficient priority.
The presence of teachers and students in remote islands such as Halki is living proof that public education is everywhere even in the most remote parts of the country. It is our duty to provide them with the best possible learning and teaching conditions.
For this reason we proceed systematically to upgrade the school infrastructure. The Primary School of Halkis has joined the 2nd Phase of the Marietta Giannakou program with interventions amounting to 135156euros for the renovation of the facilities the creation of accessibility infrastructure for people with disabilities and the upgrading of the sports fields.
At the same time we continue to strengthen the schools with human resources. From 2019 until today 51 permanent appointments of teachers have been made in the school units of the Dodecanese and 75 recruitments of substitutes of all specialties. This year alone 8 permanent appointments and 11 substitute recruitments were made so that every child has the teachereutic needed. Because for us every child wherever they grow up deserves to find their teacher and professor in the classroom from day one.
I want to congratulate from the bottom of my heart the substitute teacher Elpiniki Tsomakas for the initiative of the free traditional dance lessons she offered throughout the school year. I also want to warmly thank the Mayor of Chalkis Evangelos Fragakis for his constant cooperation and support in education as well as the Directorof High School with L.T. Michalis Hatzantonis the Principal of the Primary School Zoumboulia Teremeke the Principal of the Kindergarten Christina Halatsi all the teachers the parents and above all the children of Halki.
Every child regardless of whether they live in a large urban center or on a small remote island should have access to the same opportunities to learn progress and create. This is the message we receive from Halki and this is the States commitment tolocal communities and Greek families.
