(Chinhphu.vn) - "Tree Planting Festival" has great significance, encouraging people across the country to plant trees, plant forests, join hands to protect the ecological environment, develop sustainable forests, for a green Vietnam.
At the launching ceremony of "Tree Planting Festival to forever remember Uncle Ho" - Spring At Ty 2025 today (February 5), Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan shared a thought-provoking story: There was a father and son who went to the same countryside. The son was absorbed in admiring the scenery, but after a while he couldn't see his father, so the son went to look for him and found his father diligently digging the ground and planting trees.
The father asked his son to find water to water the tree, then he took his son to rest under a big shady tree and said to him: "You see, someone in the past planted a tree and took good care of it so that today we and everyone else will have shade. So why don't we plant a tree now so that everyone in the future can receive shade?"
"Society becomes more developed and better when each person plants trees to provide shade, which they know they will never enjoy," said Minister Le Minh Hoan, emphasizing that "Tree Planting Festival" has great significance, encouraging people across the country to plant trees, plant forests, join hands to protect the ecological environment, develop sustainable forests, for a green Vietnam.
In the current period, Minister Le Minh Hoan said that the green and sustainable trend has gradually become a mandatory requirement, a practical action, spreading globally. The European Union (EU) has issued regulations on anti-deforestation. Coffee, forestry products, or agricultural products in general will be refused for consumption and trade if produced and harvested from devastated forests.
"A tree, a forest is not only valuable from the wood exploitation and processing industry, but above all, it is also considered a natural resource, with multi-purpose and multi-functionality," the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confided. He also added that in addition to the value from raw wood production, forests are also a space to preserve wildlife, a place to experience natural landscapes, a place to preserve biodiversity, and absorb carbon. The forest ecosystem also leaves invaluable lessons for humans such as: knowing how to stick together, protect each other, live together, and coexist in harmony.
Those almost invisible values, according to the Minister, have created a harmonious and friendly living space between humans and nature. Balancing the ecosystem helps people enjoy the gifts that nature has given. In addition, there are countless natural herbs and medicinal herbs with high nutritional value.
The concept of "golden forest" is now not simply about exploiting wood and rare products according to the "single value" mindset. Instead, people must have deeper awareness, more practical actions, and live in more harmony. From the mindset of mastering nature and exploiting nature, each of us needs to move towards a mindset of respecting nature, relying on nature, for sustainable development. Love of nature will gradually become love of the homeland, love of people in every Vietnamese person, originating from simple tasks such as planting trees, watering, caring for each tree, and persistently cultivating forests.
"Plant trees. Cultivate people. Cultivate the future," Minister Le Minh Hoan emphasized, sending the message that when each of us sows a seed, cultivates a tree, we are nurturing hope, cultivating the future.
According to the Department of Forestry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), despite facing many difficulties and challenges, in the context of the world situation continuing to have complex fluctuations, being negatively affected by climate change, unusual natural disasters, especially typhoon Yagi, the whole country has planted 254,000 hectares of concentrated forests and 130 million scattered trees, contributing to proactively providing raw materials for the processing and export industry.
The national forest coverage rate is maintained at over 42%, forest protection work has positive changes; forest environmental service revenue reaches 3,460 billion VND (up 10% compared to 2023); the export value of wood and forest products reaches nearly 17.3 billion USD, exceeding 14% compared to the 2024 plan.
