π Tender Overview
Summary
Rijkswaterstaat, NS and Arriva are offering travelers a train ticket with a 50% discount during the closure of the A2 between Het Vonderen and Kersensheide in October in Limburg, even during rush hour. The discount on the train ticket applies from October 9 to October 11.By offering cheaper train tickets, travelers are encouraged to use the train as an alternative transport. This is a test to see whether the train can be a good alternative for motorists during major works. For NS, this is the second test during major road works, after the previous test during the closure of the Vlake tunnel in Zeeland.
A second NS test will examine, among other things, whether motorists choose the train, at what times they travel and what role the discount plays in their choice.Every outcome is valuable, even if the effect is different from the previous trial in Zeeland. The first test took place during the closure of the Vlaketunnel. From April 9 to 19, more than 12,500 discounted train tickets were sold on the Zeeland line, compared to approximately 1,500 in a comparable period.Travelers received an average discount of 58%.Two-thirds of the tickets were used on weekdays and about 40% for peak-hour travel.A short questionnaire showed that almost half of the travelers would not have made the trip without the Price Time Deal.Of those interviewed, 32% indicated that they would have taken the car differently. The situation in Limburg is different from that in Zeeland. The previous results are therefore not a prediction, but a starting point for further research. The test on the A2 should provide new insights, so that NS and Rijkswaterstaat can better assess in future work whether the train is a suitable alternative.
