A new Special Eurobarometer published by the European Commission highlights opportunities for food research and innovation, alongside the need to build public confidence in emerging technologies.Across the EU, 68% of respondents agree that food innovation can give farmers and producers additional tools to tackle climate change, pests, resource scarcity and supply disruptions. Crops adapted to drought, pests or extreme weather attracted the highest acceptance among the products presented, with 50% of respondents expressing comfort with these foods.However, 72% of Europeans say they do not feel well informed about innovative foods, ingredients and crops. While 39% hold a positive view overall, this rises to 72% among those who feel well informed. The findings show an association between information and attitudes, rather than establishing causation.For researchers and innovators, the results underline the importance of integrating public expectations into the development of new solutions. Transparency is a central priority: 85% want clear product names and understandable information about production methods, contents and origin.The findings will inform research, innovation and policy development, including Food 2040, the EUs food systems research and innovation policy framework. Through consumer involvement, co-creation and real-world testing, the framework aims to align innovation with economic, environmental and societal needs.For more information:EC News
