As students across Saskatchewan begin a new school year, it is an opportunity to reconnect with friends, build new relationships and continue discovering their strengths and interests. For teachers, educational assistants, school staff and administrators, it is an opportunity to support student success and help create positive learning environments where every student can learn and grow.
This year, Saskatchewan continues its focus on strengthening literacy outcomes for students.
We know that reading proficiency by the end of Grade 3 is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success and high school graduation, and there are few milestones in a childs educational journey more significant than the moment they move from learning to read to reading to learn, Education Minister Everett Hindley said. That is why improving literacy remains one of our key priorities.
The province is also expanding the Specialized Support model to an additional 50 schools in the 2026-27 school year. This brings the total number of participating schools to 108 across all 27 school divisions. The model provides interventions that help students build self-regulation skills by offering additional resources and specially trained staff. This ensures strong learning outcomes and positive school experiences for all students.
At this time of year, we also remind motorists to slow down in school zones, obey posted signs and watch carefully for students travelling to and from school. Young people can be excited and distracted as they reunite with friends and settle back into daily routines. Creating safe school communities is a shared responsibility.
