The Government of Sri Lanka is in plans to pass a new Immigration and Emigration Act covering the introduction of electronic and biometric systems for border crossings in the country.This new law will replace an act passed earlier in 1948 which does not effectively deal with the movement of people in and out of the country thereby contributing towards skill deficits and labor shortages. This new act is expected to even help in addressing issues related to migrant rights human trafficking forced labor and modern slavery voting rights and governance in migration. Apart from biometrics the act covers processing applications and back end system monitoring.In order to facilitate employment of foreign nationals a separate visa category will be developed which will enable the large population of foreign students in the country to join the labor market. This will even benefit nearly 2 million Sri Lankans who are employed worldwide.
