The Ministry of National Defense promotes the career of 17 high-performance athletes through annual contracts in the Armed Forces. Through the program, athletes access a scholarship to support their exclusive dedication, a requirement to compete at an international level. The list includes outstanding competitors in disciplines such as athletics, sailing and rowing, among other sports.
The Military Sports Vacancies Program of the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) supports high-performance Uruguayan athletes, who stand out in their disciplines, both nationally and internationally.
The coordinator of the Sports Coordination and Development Unit, Edgar Ten-Hoever, explained to Presidential Communication that athletes sign an annual contract with the MDN through one of its forces.
Currently there are 17 vacancies, which are distributed between the National Navy (6), the Uruguayan Air Force (6) and the National Army (5).
To be part of the program, the different federations apply to the ministry. Subsequently, the Uruguayan Olympic Committee and the chief of staff of each military force are consulted, he explained.
The employment contract allows access to a scholarship and all the social benefits of the MDN. He warned that the contract is evaluated every year with the aim of renewing it or designating the vacancy to another athlete.
The athletes who make up the program are:
National Army:
Valentín Soca (athletics), Fernando Diz (sailing), Emiliano Lasa (athletics), Lautaro Techera (athletics) and María Pía Fernández (athletics).
National Navy:
