At the beginning of August, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Valorlux and the Luxembourg Confederation signed the 6th environmental agreement, thus reaffirming their common commitment to the prevention of packaging waste and the responsible use of resources. Group photo - Group photo of the signing of the 6th environmental agreement: a reinforced commitment to the prevention of packaging waste (c) Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity The environmental agreement notably governs the ECO-Sac initiative which, since its launch in 2004, has become symbolic of the transition towards more sustainable consumption patterns in Luxembourg. Thanks to the commitment of partners and the support of consumers, nearly 1.9 billion single-use plastic bags have been avoided since its creation. This result represents more than 13,000 tonnes of plastic saved as well as the equivalent of 29 million liters of oil preserved. The new environmental agreement is a continuation of this collective success and aims to continue prevention efforts at the source. Among the priorities are the maintenance and development of the use of ECO-Sacs and Superbags, as well as the strengthening of habits of reuse of the latter. With this in mind, the partners want to make reuse a daily reflex. If the majority of consumers still buy between one and five new ECO-Bags per year, awareness campaigns are starting to bear fruit. In 2025, sales of ECO-Bags decreased by 10%, an encouraging signal which demonstrates a gradual evolution in consumption habits towards more reuse. The agreement also provides for the development of new targeted actions intended to further reduce packaging waste and promote the circular economy. These initiatives will aim to raise awareness and support consumers and businesses, encourage more sustainable behavior and preserve natural resources. Through this 6th environmental agreement, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Valorlux and the Luxembourg Confederation intend to consolidate their cooperation and pursue concrete actions that contribute to the reduction of waste, the protection of the environment and a more responsible use of resources.
