Every third successful cyber attack on industry has signs of espionage, and the main incidents in the industry are related to user accounts and control over them - such conclusions are contained in the analytical report of the Solar group of companies (a subsidiary of Rostelecom operating in the field of information security). Particular interest in industry (especially heavy industry and the fuel and energy sector) is also visible on the darknet: hackers are often looking for access and other data that will help penetrate an enterprise’s network and remain undetected for as long as possible.
The report is based on an analysis of attempted cyber attacks on Solar JSOC clients; analysis of external cyber threats conducted by the Solar AURA center; data from investigations of the Solar 4RAYS center and work carried out by the security analysis department.
Among the incidents recorded by the Solar JSOC cyberattack countermeasures center, there are password guessing attempts (brute force), including from critical systems, administrative access outside the network (indicates the use of OS tools for remote access), numerous account locks (indicates multiple brute force attempts ). In total, over the past three years, about 600 thousand attempted cyber attacks have been made on the industrial sector.
At the same time, of the total amount of data leaked into the network in recent years, only 1% relates to industry, another 3% belongs to the telecom industry, experts at the Solar AURA external digital threats monitoring center note. We are talking about attempts to steal both technical information and commercial data about clients and transactions.
