📋 Tender Overview
The cause of the global failure of automated systems that disrupted the work of airports and banks in many countries around the world could have been a hacker attack, Yevgeny Kuznetsov, an innovation expert and head (2015-2016) of the author's group for developing a national report on innovation commissioned by the Russian government, told TASS.
"As before, the main risk to people is brought by people themselves - ignoring risks or saving on the security and reliability of systems. Most likely, here too, the human factor is at play, a hacker attack on a vulnerable element of the system is quite likely, which led to such a large-scale, global failure of many systems," he said.
Answering the question of whether the introduction of artificial intelligence into global control systems for the most important transport and information structures could lead to more serious failures in their work, the expert noted that “the risks of failures in automated systems, of course, exist.”
"However, many fears are exaggerated. Let's recall the fear of the "Y2K mistake", and the largest man-made accidents, for example, Chernobyl, were caused by people, and even the old imperfect automation was not to blame for them. The design of modern control systems, as a rule, takes these risks into account, the consequences are eliminated very quickly," Kuznetsov said.
