π Tender Overview
Summary
The restoration of Middelburg station has officially started. NS Regional Director Magdalena Piotrowska, ProRail Regional Director Dimitri Kruik and Middelburg councilor Jesse Aarnoutse (mobility) symbolically gave the starting signal. Travelers received free coffee and tea from extras in historical clothing from the theater group Ontspoord. In the coming years, the station building and platform roof will be restored, the pedestrian tunnel will be refurbished and the station area will be renovated.
NS is responsible for the restoration of the station building. It retains its familiar monumental appearance on the outside. For example, the window frames of the building are painted in the original color scheme. On the inside, the building will be smarterly laid out and renovated. There will be a catering facility on the side of the pedestrian tunnel. The spaces in the rest of the building can be rented out. In addition, the bicycle shed in the station building will be renovated and made more user-friendly. We have wanted to tackle the station for a long time, so we are very happy that the restoration is now starting, says Magdalena Piotrowska, Regional Director South of NS. It is currently causing some inconvenience, but in the end there is a station that Middelburg can be proud of. And so can we, of course!

ProRail already dismantled the monumental platform roof at the end of 2025. It is currently being restored at a different location. ProRails role lies mainly in renewing and improving the platforms, the passenger tunnel and the technical facilities, says Regional Director Dimitri Kruik of the rail manager. We will ensure that the station will be more accessible, logical in use and future-proof.

StationspleinThe municipality of Middelburg will start working on Stationsplein at a later date. Middelburg station is an important junction, where different forms of transport come together. This includes facilities such as public transport bicycles, kiss-and-ride or park-and-ride. The station square will get a new look. The outdoor area will be greener and more attractive, with new paving, large plant areas and space to sit. This creates an inviting and pleasant environment. The station has occupied an important place in Middelburg for generations and is also a monumental building with a special historical value, says Middelburg councilor Jesse Aarnoutse (mobility). It tells something about the history of our city and about how generations of Middelburgers arrived here, left and met each other. With this development we ensure that that historic character is preserved, while at the same time we prepare the station and the surrounding area for the future. In use The station will remain in use during the work. The parties involved therefore carefully coordinate their planning so that the work can be carried out safely and efficiently and inconvenience is limited as much as possible. A number of ProRail activities must be carried out during a period without train traffic. ProRail announces these periods well in advance.
