A large-scale program for the reconstruction of 124 railway stations across the country is being implemented in Kazakhstan as part of the implementation of the task of the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the improvement of railway stations and their infrastructure. The works include a comprehensive modernization of the station infrastructure, including: renovation of buildings and engineering networks, reconstruction of platforms and areas near the station, expansion of waiting rooms, installation of modern security systems, elevators and lifting devices, as well as creating a barrier-free environment. In the most dilapidated facilities, old buildings were completely demolished and replaced by new passenger complexes. As of August 20, 2026, the Government has completed the reconstruction of 72 railway stations in 17 regions of the country. It is planned to commission 34 more stations by the end of August, and work on 15 facilities will be completed by the end of September. In general, reconstruction of 121 out of 124 railway stations is planned in 2026. Three more large facilities - Astana, Almaty and Turkestan railway stations will be completed in 2027. They have a historical and architectural value, therefore, the works are carried out according to a separate schedule, taking into account the requirements to preserve the original architectural appearance of the buildings. Modernization of railway stations ensures the adaptation of the infrastructure to the increasing load and the improvement of the quality of service to passengers in the regions as well as in large regional stations. The measures taken allow to increase the reliability of the railway infrastructure, improve the quality of service and create more comfortable conditions for passengers. A further increase in passenger flow is expected within the framework of the development of railway transport and modernization of railway stations, which will increase the load on transport networks and require compliance with modern standards of service.
