Qatar University College of Engineering QU-CENG Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering MIE Department of Chemical Engineering ChE and QUs Gas Processing Center GPC jointly organized a workshop on Supercritical CO2 Power and Water Production A Breakthrough Technology. The workshop was chaired by Professor Ahmad Sleiti from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and attended by a number of university officials including CENG Dean Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Prof Abdelmagid Hamouda Associate Dean for Research and Postgraduate Programs Prof Ahmed Masoud MIE Head Prof Elsadig Mahdi ChE Head Prof Majeda Khraisheh GPC Director Prof Muftah Al Naas as well as CENG faculty members and staff.Power cycles based on super-critical carbon dioxide sCO2 can potentially yield thermal efficiencies of more than 50 at lower capital cost than steam-based power cycles. Implementing sCO2 technology has national and technical benefits that are confirmed by US DOE. The national benefits include promoting technical leadership boosting competitiveness stimulating domestic jobs conserving water lowering electricity costs and enabling affordable scalable power generation from local heat sources. Technical benefits include higher thermal efficiencies 50 reduced use of fuel and water more than 4 times compact designfootprint and lower capital costs. This workshop is aiming at the utilization of Qatars abundant natural resources to combine renewable energy and waste heat reduction to seamlessly complement electric energy generated by burning of inexpensive natural gas through a clean oxy-combustion process using super-critical carbon dioxide sCO2 as the working fluid in a semi-closed Brayton cycle. When the sun is not shining and natural gas is burnt with oxygen clean water and additional carbon dioxide is produced in the combustion process. This carbon dioxide is then naturally captured at zero cost and hence is not emitted into the atmosphere. The water produced can be used for human consumption. The captured carbon dioxide is then used for enhanced oil recovery or for chemical industry.Solar systems working in tandem with the burning of inexpensive natural gas through a clean oxy-combustion process and bioreactors could have a great potential for the grid power generation in terms of improving grid reliability regulation and other energy services reducing the emission and pollution providing continuous baseload power supply reducing costs and yielding higher conversion efficiencies of the combined hybrid system.A variation of the same concept indirectly fired sCO2 power cycle can be used to convert wasted heat from gas flaring to electricity. MIT Technology Review in its May 2018 issue called the sCO2 power generation technology to be Zero-Carbon Natural Gas technology and ranked it as one of 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2018.
