The exit from coal demands a lot from people. The decision changes regions lives certainties. This structural change is a challenge for the coal regions. We take that seriously. At the same time it is an opportunity. For new value creation. For modern industry. For good work. The federal government and North Rhine-Westphalia are using this opportunity hand in hand Hand. In Aachen baut die Cellovate GmbH eine Batteriefabrik. In Duisburg folgt eine weitere Batteriefabrik der ORE Energy GmbH. In Erkelenz erweitert die MeliCon GmbH ihre Production. In 2024 the BMWE expanded the federal funding program STARK to include investment business support. In accordance with its state aid law basis this was initially limited until the end of 2025. However with the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework the so-called CISAF the state aid relief was expanded and extended until the end of 2030. Accordingly the BMWE will continue the STARK business support in the coal regions and publish a new funding announcement this year - ideally in the summer.
The countries with regions and coal-fired power plant locations support the BMWE in project selection. At the same time they advise companies on site - for example when choosing a specific location.
