Earlier the president of PiS Jarosaw Kaczyski who as prime minister initiated the idea of digging the Spit also signed it.The tube with the foundation act was embedded in the bridge abutment under construction.Two swing bridges will be built on the Spit above the canal enabling the continuous maintenance of car traffic regardless of the vessels passing the new waterway. From the beginning one of the assumptions was to ensure the priority of vehicular traffic in the area of the shipping channel.As reminded by the Maritime Office in Gdynia the total length of the new waterway from the Gulf of Gdask through the Vistula Lagoon to Elblg will be nearly 23 kilometers. The crossing of the Vistula Lagoon alone will be just over 10 kilometers along the Elblg River - also over 10 kilometers and the remaining approximately 2.5 km is a section consisting of a sluice an external port and a parking stand. The channel is to be 5 m deep.According to the schedule the construction of the canal on the Vistula Spit should be completed in 2022.
