New rules for radio equipment
On December 7, 2022, the European Union published the RED Directive, which introduced new rules for radio equipment. The directive required member states, including Poland, to implement regulations on the unification of charging standards. The deadline for their introduction expired on December 28, 2023.
Benefits of implementing the RED Directive
Poland introduced the RED Directive on the occasion of the adoption of the Electronic Communications Law (Article 278). The new regulations require electronic devices to have a universal USB Type-C socket. The packaging of the devices will include pictograms indicating whether a charger is included. The new regulations will reduce the cost of purchasing chargers and the amount of electronic waste. One charger will fit multiple devices. The RED Directive will benefit consumers and the environment. This is an important step towards a more sustainable future.
Validity periods of the regulations
From December 28, 2024, the new rules will apply to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, game consoles, speakers, book readers, keyboards, mice, and navigation systems. From April 28, 2026, the regulations will also apply to laptops. Importantly, equipment that does not have a universal socket and is already on sale will still be available in stores. On the other hand, all new devices placed on the market from December 28, 2024 must meet the requirements of the RED Directive.
