PEรARANDA Nueva Ecija โ The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday announced that it has completed a PHP141.84-million flood control project along the Peรฑaranda River in Barangay Sto. Tomas in this town.
The 775.2-linear-meter double-berm revetment completed in coordination with the Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineering Office is designed to fortify the riverbanks and mitigate flooding according to District Engineer Robert Jay Panaligan in a statement. Panaligan said the flood protection wall is reinforced with steel sheet pile foundations and integrated with cross drains to ensure efficient water flow.
A 10-meter-wide road dike was also developed as part of the project offering both flood protection and improved access for local communities.
This project is a crucial flood mitigation measure that not only protects lives and properties but also enhances accessibility in the area Panaligan said.
The road dike can serve as an alternate route during flooding and emergencies providing safer passage for residents and responders he added.
OIC-Assistant District Engineer Leonora Cruz said the project is expected to reduce pressure on Peรฑaranda Riverโs banks by redirecting excess water toward Pampanga River which has a higher floodwater capacity.
The project funded under the 2024 national budget is part of DPWHs ongoing flood control initiatives in Nueva Ecija and aligns with the governments long-term strategy to safeguard agricultural lands livelihoods and residential communities from the destructive impact of seasonal flooding. (PNA)
