π Tender Overview
The tool was created by the IGP, an entity belonging to Minam, and is freely accessible to students, researchers, authorities and the general public. The Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP), an entity belonging to the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), has developed an innovative digital platform called PeruSis (from Peru Sismico), which allows interactive exploration and study of the seismic movements that have occurred in Peru and the world for more than five centuries.
Users of this innovative service can select these phenomena by region, date, magnitude and depth, facilitating their detailed analysis for the purposes of scientific studies, and above all, for prevention and risk management. Anyone and from anywhere in the world can access this information. Its consultation methodology is simple, especially for schoolchildren and university students. For researchers and decision makers it is an essential tool, since it allows identifying areas with high seismic activity.
Historical earthquakes
In Perusis you can see the most shocking earthquakes in Peruvian history, such as the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shook southern Peru on August 13, 1868, mainly in Moquegua, Arequipa and Tacna, claiming thousands of lives.
Also the M8.6 earthquake of July 9, 1586, which shook Lima at 7:21 p.m., the M7.9 earthquake that affected San Vicente de Canete, Nazca and Pisco on August 15, 2007, as well as the M7.8 earthquake of November 13, 1655 that gave way to the largest religious cult of the image of the Lord of Miracles in the country and in America.
Prevention
This interactive tool will contribute greatly to strengthening the culture of seismic prevention both in the country and in the world, said the executive president of the IGP, Hernando Tavera.
He pointed out that this platform integrates data from the National Seismological Center (CENSIS) and the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) of the United States.
