Peru Solid Waste Tender

📄 Tender ID: 514581820 📅 Published: 12 Feb 2025

📋 Tender Overview

Minam works in coordination with municipalities, through the Executive Unit 003-GICA, for the implementation of sanitary landfills and waste recovery plants. In Peru, solid waste management is a growing challenge due to the increase in population and the consequent generation of waste. The Ministry of the Environment (Minam) supports, by providing technical assistance and strengthening capacities, the different municipalities of the country so that they can carry out their solid waste infrastructure projects such as sanitary landfills and waste recovery plants, to be built in their respective localities and thereby contribute to improving the lives of the population.

This is part of the sustainable solutions to the waste problem that we are promoting from the Ministry of the Environment. These infrastructures are a key piece in the transition towards the circular economy, in which waste is valued and reintegrated into the production cycle. In addition, they contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the protection of natural resources, said the Vice Minister of Environmental Management, Edgar Romero.

Sanitary landfills and environmental care
A sanitary landfill is a space designed to receive urban waste in a controlled and safe manner, with technical and environmental criteria and principles. It differs from a landfill in that the latter does not comply with any specialized or sustainable standards. Below are some of the significant advantages of a sanitary landfill:
Environmental protection: this type of infrastructure has waterproofing systems and treatment of liquids generated by the decomposition of waste (leachate), avoiding the contamination of soils and aquifers.
Emission control: they capture the biogas generated by the decomposition of organic matter, which can be used to generate renewable energy.
Reduction of health risks: by controlling disease vectors (such as rodents and insects) and minimizing odors, sanitary landfills contribute to improving public health and territorial planning.
Recovery of degraded areas: they can be built in degraded areas, recovering them for later use, for example, as parks or green areas.

According to the Minam Executive Unit 003 Comprehensive Environmental Quality Management, the implementation of sanitary landfills, combined with waste reduction and reuse strategies, as well as a strong component of citizen education, is essential to build cleaner, healthier and more resilient cities.

Dumps
Dumps are places where solid waste is dumped without any care or technical criteria and is exposed to the open air, which generates the proliferation of insects, flies and rodents; and that affects the health of the inhabitants.

They are also spaces that contaminate water, air and soil. The waste that is disposed of there cannot be recycled. In addition, they are potential sources of infection for different diseases.
