Peru Serfor Relocates Tender

📄 Tender ID: 514670834 📅 Published: 14 Feb 2025

📋 Tender Overview

The specimen was recovered from a home in Ilo-Moquegua, where it was kept as a pet.A juvenile specimen of the black-capped monkey (Sapajus macrocephalus), which was kept as a pet in a house in Ilo - Moquegua, was recovered and transferred to the Esperanza Verde rescue center in Pucallpa, where it is now with other specimens of its species.

The rescue was carried out after a citizen complaint through the Alerta SERFOR platform, which allowed a joint intervention between the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), the Specialized Prosecutors Office for Environmental Matters and the Decentralized Unit for Environmental Protection PNP Moquegua, who, upon arriving at the scene, found the monkey in a cage, evidencing that it had been raised as a pet.

These animals are taken from their mothers and sold as pets. At first they seem easy to handle, but as they grow, their behavior becomes aggressive, which often leads to them being mistreated, tied with chains or even abandoned. In addition, their presence in cities, such as in this case the coast, is not natural and can represent a risk for people, explained Julio Mamani, a wildlife specialist at the Technical Administration for Forestry and Wildlife (ATFFS) Moquegua - Tacna.

The specimen was initially transferred to Tacna for a health assessment and a conditioning treatment in terms of its diet. Then, thanks to the efforts of SERFOR and the support of the NGO Unidos por los Animales (UPA), the monkey was flown to Pucallpa and handed over to the Regional Government of Ucayali, which sent it to the Esperanza Verde rescue center.

Now, the specimen can be rehabilitated in a suitable environment with others of its species.

It is important to mention that the black-headed monkey is an endemic species of the Amazon rainforest of the upper Amazon River basin.

When witnessing these types of cases, citizens are urged to report them through the SERFOR Alert application https://appweb.serfor.gob.pe/alertaserfor/; SERFOR Alert via WhatsApp at 947 588269 or by calling the ATFFS Moquegua-Tacna telephone number 945 140 480.
