Employment in the formal private sector registered an increase of 2.8% in the Arequipa region in March 2024, according to data from the Socio-Economic Labor Observatory of the Regional Labor Management. The regional manager of Labor, Catherine Rodriguez Torreblanca, explained, in this sense, that the figure in question meant the creation of 5,887 new jobs, which allowed the increase of the workforce of the Arequipa private sector to 215,656 workers, this with respect to the 209,769 registered in March 2023.
She explained that the variation in employment in the formal private sector showed a favorable performance, especially in the manufacturing sectors, which grew by 4.0%, which represented 1,154 new jobs, as well as commerce with an increase of 3.0%, a value that meant 1,096 new jobs. However, the services sector expanded by 0.8% (875 additional jobs), while extractive activities rose by 0.9% (223 jobs created). In contrast, the construction sector reported a 2.2% drop, which represented 210 fewer jobs at the end of the third month of this year.
It should be noted that new job opportunities were greater for women. For example, to date, 2,986 jobs were created for this group, while 2,410 new jobs were created for men. According to age group, employment among young people registered a growth of 0.6%, while among adults there was an expansion of 3.5%. Based on educational level, employment decreased among those workers who reached the primary level (-14.7%). On the other hand, those with secondary and higher education experienced a positive increase of 1.1% and 4.4% respectively.
Finally, according to the size of the company, the largest number of new jobs in the formal private sector occurred in micro and small companies (from 1 to 10 workers), whose growth was 5.1%. In companies with 101 or more employees, the increase was 2.2%, while in companies with 11 to 100 employees, an increase of 1.4% was recorded.
