π Tender Overview
54.5% of young professionals in Arequipa are inadequately employed, that is, they work in an occupation that is not in accordance with their educational level.
This situation, part of the current employment panorama of young people (15 to 29 years old) in the region, was addressed during the third ordinary session of the Regional Council for Labor and Employment Promotion (CRTPE), which was chaired by the regional governor, Rohel SΓ‘nchez SΓ‘nchez.
The meeting brought together heads and representatives of more than 14 institutions from the government, employer and worker sectors, who considered that addressing the reality that young professionals are going through is key to proposing alternative solutions and actions with the aim of generating "dignified and decent" work for the population of Arequipa.
Under this criterion, the technical secretary of the CRTPE and regional manager of Labor, Catherine RodrΓguez Torreblanca, explained that according to data from the Directorate of Socio-Economic Labor Research (Disel), about 26 thousand young people are working in occupations other than the profession they studied.
He remarked that this reality affects young people with non-university higher level professions (66.9%) in greater proportion compared to the university higher level (45.6%). Occupational mismatch among young professionals also affects more male professionals with completed higher education (61%) than women (60.7%).
Another aspect of concern is the high informality in this age group, which involves 73.8% of informally employed young people (134,021), a figure that is above the average informality of adults (30 to 65 years old) which amounts to 64.2%. As well as, the youth unemployment rate is 8.8%.
In this context, unions and organizations, which make up the CRTPE, called for addressing issues such as the situation of young people who work through "receipts for fees", in order to take actions that can contribute to improving the situation of these groups.
For this reason, as part of the actions of the CRTPE, the Labor and Employment commissions were formed, which will directly address this and other issues. In the case of the Labor Commission, the members are; the Single Confederation of Workers (CUT), the National Superintendence of Labour Inspection (Sunafil), the Chamber of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), the Macro-regional Federation of Mining, Metallurgical and Steel Workers of the South, the Federation of Workers of Arequipa, the Regional Council of Deans (Conrede) and the Confederation of Workers of Peru β CTP.
Meanwhile, the Employment Commission will be made up of the Regional Labor Management, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arequipa (CCIA), the Association of Industrial Park Companies (ADEPIA), the AQP Youth Movement, the Autonomous Central of Workers of Peru β CATP, the Roundtable for the Fight Against Poverty and the Regional Management of Production.
