The Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), through the Directorate of Environmental Geology and Geological Risk, with the objective of determining critical areas to intervene, as well as safe areas for the installation of temporary shelters and relocation of the population in the face of the El Niño phenomenon in several sectors of the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash and Lima, decreed in D.S 089-2023-PCM, has proposed the formulation and development of the intervention plan in the preventive field of action to mitigate the impact of geological hazards associated with the event of the El Niño Phenomenon 2023-2024.
The studies to be carried out include the identification and evaluation of geological hazards, through the displacement of nine brigades of geologists in the different sectors of the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash Norte, Ancash Sur, Lima-Norte, Lima-Sur and Metropolitan Lima, during the months of August-October of this year, contemplating phases of planning work, programming, field visits, processing and interpretation of information, which will result in the preparation of six technical reports for the areas established in said Intervention Plan.
Likewise, regional and local authorities have been informed of the activities to be carried out, in addition to holding technical meetings, training talks and delivery of dissemination and education materials on geological hazards.
In this way, Ingemmet fulfills the function of providing technical assistance in geological hazards to various state institutions and investigating and carrying out evaluation and monitoring studies of geological hazards in the national territory in order to determine their effects on the community and the environment.
