π Tender Overview
The Geophysical Institute of Peru IGP an agency attached to the Ministry of Environment MINAM is part of a proposal submitted to the National Science Foundation NSF to develop and deploy two large radio receiving stations that will increase the observation capabilities of our Jicamarca Radio Observatory. This grant obtained in cooperation with the University of Dallas in Texas is for 5 years as part of NSFs Large Research Instruments MRI Program. This instrumentation will allow researchers to gather more detailed information about Earths atmosphere and ionosphere. One of the important goals to be achieved with this new instrumentation for the PGI is a better specification and understanding of space weather. Disturbances and turbulence between the particles that make up the ionosphere are part of a global space weather system that can affect radio communications as well as degrade the quality of GPS signals used for positioning and navigation. A better understanding of the regions dynamics and the factors affecting it will help researchers develop models to more accurately predict space weather.Dr. Danny Scipin director of the Radio Observatory of Jicamarca mentioned that this grant from the NSF will provide the necessary tools for the scientists of the institution to continue doing science for the benefit of the Peruvian population. Likewise the current research capacities of the equatorial region will be increased from Jicamarca. The dataAt our Jicamarca Radio Observatory the ionospheric radar uses more than 18000 dipole antennas spread over 90000 square meters of land to emit radio signals into space where they are scattered by ionosphere particles. Signals coming from space contain important information about this area. The instrumentation that the project will develop will allow the IGP to observe regions of space that are not currently possible and in this way apply novel remote sensing techniques for a variety of new and improved observations. In this way the IGP will continue to carry out research in geospace always continuing with its commitment to carry out Science to protect us science to advance.
