π Tender Overview
In the framework of the commemoration of the Pisco earthquake, which took place on August 15, 2007, the Air War College received training on "Disaster Risk Management and contingency plans for the occurrence of large earthquakes." This event was in charge of Dr. Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).
One of the aspects of greatest concern addressed by the seismology expert is the lack of a seismic prevention culture in the country. "Despite the previous reports and warnings issued by the IGP, the construction of houses in unsafe conditions persists, in areas prone to telluric movements. These facts show a lack of preventive awareness," he said forcefully during his presentation.
The meeting was attended by 31 colonels belonging to the Air Force, Navy, Peruvian Army and National Police who received with great interest the training that addressed various aspects related to seismic activity.
Science cannot predict the unpredictable
Today, science allows us to forecast earthquakes, in terms of place and magnitude thanks to the implementation of GPS networks that, added to seismological information, have been able to identify for the coastal edge of Peru, the areas where deformation has been accumulating and that could give rise to a large earthquake in the future. These zones called, "Seismic Coupling Zones", are present off the central and southern coast of Peru.
After the training, the colonels had the opportunity to learn about the National Seismological Center (Censis), a valuable initiative developed by the IGP. As an official State institution in the field of Geophysics, the IGP is dedicated to issuing reports, bulletins and reports on seismic activity taking place in the national territory.
The relevance of delving into the dynamic behavior of the Earth is positioned as an indisputable priority for the Ministry of Environment (Minam) through the IGP. Consequently, we will continue to promote our motto of "Science to protect ourselves, science to move forward", in order to strengthen the preparation and mitigation of the impacts derived from natural phenomena.
